Within the movie, Bette Davis performs Charlotte, the “mad lady” recluse who purportedly killed her lover John Mayhew (Bruce Dern) with an axe at a celebration thirty years earlier. Within the interim, she’s been shunned by society and he or she’s on the cusp of eviction so a brand new freeway could be constructed on her property.
