Marvel Lady was a groundbreaking movie in some ways: it was the primary main superhero film with a girl within the lead position, and it launched a complete civilization of highly effective, superior ladies warriors within the Amazons and their hidden kingdom on Themyscira—what Nielsen describes as an “insane, cool, beautiful universe” that she cherished being part of.
“I cherished that island, these costumes, these characters, the values that these Amazons represented,” she says now. “It was improbable. I constructed that character off actual historic and anthropology books on the Amazons, there’s now actual DNA proof that these Amazons actually did exist, that there actually have been well-known feminine warriors, and we now know that burial mounds have been the place these warriors have been buried. They only assumed it was a person due to who the particular person was buried with. And now they understand, oh, no, DNA evaluation reveals they have been ladies.”
