Whereas Lloyd’s artwork offered some steering, McTeigue needed to toughen choices to convey the comedian into dwell motion.
“For the opposite visuals, we needed to make a distinction between the state-run media and the remainder of the movie. The whole lot that was run by the state had this very video-esque high quality to it, like a surveillance digicam. After which we had John Damage because the Chief, which is a callback to Huge Brother and the 1984 film [in which Hurt played protagonist Winston Smith], with an enormous pixilated head.
“In distinction, I needed V’s headquarters, the Shadow Gallery, to really feel heat. It was a repository of nice artwork, music, and movie, and a number of my tastes received in there, the books and flicks that I assumed have been vital. I took inspiration from Gordon Willis, who shot all of the Godfather films, or Gregg Toland, who shot Citizen Kane. I borrowed from the paranoid thrillers of the ’70s like The Parallax View, a few of which Willis shot, in addition to Bonnie and Clyde, Canine Day Afternoon, The Battle of Algiers… A variety of issues influenced me.”
